Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Guadalupe Mountains

Challenging Texas

Overview

Guadalupe Mountains National Park guards the highest point in Texas — the 8,751-foot Guadalupe Peak — and the most well-preserved Permian-age fossil reef on Earth. The Capitan Reef, now exposed as the dramatic limestone escarpment that defines the park's skyline, formed 265 million years ago when this desert was an inland sea. El Capitan, the sheer cliff face visible from Highway 62/180, has served as a landmark for travelers crossing the desert for centuries. The park is a hiker's park: there are over 80 miles of trails and no scenic drives. The Guadalupe Peak Trail climbs 3,000 feet over 4.2 miles to a summit pyramid with views stretching across the Chihuahuan Desert into New Mexico. McKittrick Canyon, open only to foot traffic, reveals a hidden world of bigtooth maples that turn brilliant orange and red each fall — one of the few reliable fall color shows in Texas. The canyon's Pratt Cabin sits in a cottonwood grove that feels impossibly lush given the surrounding desert. Guadalupe Mountains receives far fewer visitors than Big Bend or Carlsbad Caverns (just 30 miles away), making it one of the quietest parks in the lower 48. There are no restaurants, gas stations, or lodging inside the park. Come self-sufficient, prepared for wind (the park averages 30+ mph gusts), and ready for genuinely uncrowded trails.
